On the 5th August 2016 Rio will open its doors to the XXXI Olympiad for the very first time as Brazil became the first ever South American country to be chosen to host the Olympic games.
The Olympics in Brazil will feature more than 10,500 athletes from more than 200 countries. There will be 306 sets of medals up for grabs during the games as it prepares to host 28 sports, including rugby sevens and golf, which were each added to the schedule by the International Olympic Committee in 2009.
Rio won the bid for the Olympics in 2009 and there will be 33 different venues across the five cities of Sao Paulo, Belo Horzonte, Salvador, Brasilia and Manaus.
