GB has always featured well in this discipline, most famously when Steve Ovett and Seb Coe won the Gold and Silver medals respectively in Moscow in 1980 and in 2004 in Athens when Kelly Holmes added this gold medal to the one she won in the 1500 metres, executing the perfect middle distance double.

David Rudisha of Kenya and Mariya Savinova are the reigning Olympic Champions in the men's and women's 800 metre competitions respectively.

The World Record for men is also held by Rudisha who set a time of 1.40.91secs in 2012, but the women€™s record was set in 1983 by Czech Jarmila Kratochvilova in 1.53.28secs.
