Of all the Olympic events none receives more interest than the Blue Ribbon event of the 100m.

As a measure of the speed that a man or woman takes to cover 100m, the winner is always billed as the fastest person on earth of their gender and can expect global fame and enormous fortune as a result of their success. So high has been the kudos of winning this event that many accomplished athletes have been caught using drugs to enhance their performance and claim their place in athletics history by breaking the world record. Ben Johnson in 1988 is the most memorable culprit whose positive drugs test led to him being stripped of his gold medal although Marion Jones€™ admission of drug use has cast a long shadow over her Gold medals in Sydney in 2000.

The current men's 100m world record is held by Usain Bolt of Jamaica and was set at The World Athletics Championship in 2009 at a staggering 9.58secs.

The women€™s world record standing at 10.49secs is held posthumously by Florence Griffith-Joyner who recorded this time over twenty years ago in Indianapolis in 1988.

Due to the assistance that a tail win can give a sprinter if it exceeds a speed of 2.0 m/s the performance will be considered ineligible as a record.
